  2. Another helpful action to take before you start drawing the mask layout is to think about how the layout of your device should be structured using the program’s organizational hierarchy. Using L-Edit’s terminology as an example, it is helpful to create a wafer-level cell that will either contain the final wafer-level layout for a contact lithography mask reticle, or to visualize how the final wafer layout will look after exposure with stepper lithography. The corresponding wafer layout for stepper lithography would use a cell that contains the final photomask reticle step and repeat layout. Creating and using a wafer-level template cell that may be reused among your design team is even better. This cell can contain valuable information such as the wafer outline, where alignment marks should be placed for different processes or tools, and perimeter keep out zones.
